Hey vSwarm users,

during the last weeks I have watched more and more renderers utilizing the GPU for faster rendering. At the moment we cannot support them as there is no real GPU access within the virtual machine.
Another topic are some problems with controlling the virtual machine, this is very complicated as we need to do this with a network between the host running the machine and the VM itself.
I am thinking about replacing the VM in the vSwarm client with a technology similar to chroot in linux and/or running the client as an unprivileged user. This should give us the needed security to separate the applications from the host.

This will give us many improvements:

- less computational overhead: faster rendering:
- support for as many CPU cores as available
- support for GPU rendering
- more stable client as we do not need the complex VM setup
- less memory usage (very important on older machines)
- less disk usage (we do not need to install a full second OS, only the required apps)
- smaller update files

What do you think about this? Do you have security concerns? Or better ideas?

Here it is: support for quadcore machines and Blender 2.52!

Changes:
- New VMware Player 3.01 for quadcore support
- Blender 2.52
- Fixed a bug that caused problems with new installations

Blender 2.52 was added to the applications in the vSwarm Control Center as well.
We are using this Blender build: [www.graphicall.org]

On quadcore machines edit your settings in the client and increase the CPU setting to 4.

Known problems:
On some installations you may have to reboot if your client can not connect to the virtual machine. If it still fails check the VM directory for a stale lock directories and files. Delete all *.lck directories and files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\vSwarm Client under XP or c:\ProgramData\vSwarm Client under Vista and Win7.

If you still have problems please post in the Client Installation forum.

I am looking into the reboot problem, as updates should work without a reboot in the future.

EDIT: There may be a problem with 4 core support and still only 2 cores used. We are checking this.

Hey rendering fans,

I am just uploading a new version with minor improvements.

Only two changes:

- Added Blender 2.49b
- Added support for multiple files per job so we can now render particles, fluid and cloth.

This release also includes some changes for quad core processors. I will release a new version with support for 4 cores and Blender 2.50 next week.

I hope updating runs smoothly without stopping the client. Fell free to tell me how it works.

EDIT: instructions on how to use baked physics are here at the bottom: [support.vswarm.com]

What are the current System Capabilities, meaning are you ready for an influx of hundreds or even thousands of clients running at this time, horsepower, bandwidth, storage, etc? I'm considering putting some considerable effort into getting the word out and driving traffic, but are you ready and do you think it wiser to wait until the Unix client is ready?
